A Beginning

Resilience is the art of survival. If you’re alive, congratulations – you’re resilient. You’ve persevered through the inevitable suffering that comes to each of us: death, illness, heartbreak, mental illness, systemic injustice, and poverty, to know a few. Resilience is everywhere: A resilient ecosystem can recover from stressors and return to a state of ecological equilibrium. A community is resilient if it prepares for or bounces back from disasters, such as a pandemic or flood. A person is psychologically resilient if they don’t crack under the weight of loss. Resilience can be graceful; it can be gritty.

I believe resilience is imperative to our survival on individual, societal, and global scales. (No biggie.) You have found a corner of the internet dedicated to honoring resilience in the 21st century, within both nature and the human spirit. Here, I collect musings on climate change and society, climate adaptation, and justice-based and grassroots community resilience — and attempt to fit these puzzle pieces together in new and personal ways. I seek and welcome stories of resilience from the smallest scale (tell me about an insect that developed a second set of wings to survive hurricanes) to the mediumest scale (tell me about how you learned to heal your heart after betrayal and accept trust again) to the largest scale (tell me about how climate change is demanding the planet to adapt more quickly than we can keep up). These resiliences are interconnected, as are we all. Welcome to the messy process of surviving, learning, and growing; welcome to an evolution across scales. Thank you for being here to witness this space’s becoming.
